Papillitis

Acute inflammation of the optic disc.

Etiology:

  1. Demyelinating disease.

  2. Infection : viral or bacterial

  3. Extension of infection from CNS or Orbit.

  4. Metabolic disease.

  5. Septic focus.

Clinical picture:

Fundus: disc is elevated, retina less congested than papilloedema.

Field: central scotoma for green and red.

Pupil: reactive.

Investigations:

VEP: long latency and diminished amplitude.

Fate:

Spontaneous recovery.

Common recurrence.

And optic atrophy.

Treatment:

Treatment of the cause.

Systemic cortisone.

Vitamin B complex.
