Writer's picture: Lina Hendawy Lina Hendawy

Pleharitis is a chronic inflammation of the lid margin.

Ulcerative blepharitis

Etiology:

1- predisposing factors ( old age, diabetes, malnutrition, avitaminosis, uncontrolled error of refraction)

2- Exciting cause: Infection of the lid margin with staphylococcus aureus.

Symptoms:

Burning sensation, lacrimation, frequent falling of lashes and discharge.

Signs:

yellow crusts glue the lashes together and when removed they leave minute ulcers at the lid margin which bleed easily.

Treatment:

General treatment :-

1- improve general health.

2- control diabetes if present.

3- correct error of refraction.

Local treatment :-

1- remove crusts with soap and water or 3% sodium bicarbonate lotion.

2- apply antibiotic ointment according to sensitivity and rub it into the margin because the organisms are hidden in the hair follicles.

3- continue the same treatment for 2 weeks after apparent cure.

4- epilate any maldirected lashes ( no electrolysis).
